The mutually unbiased bases of quantum information theory are used to study the MNS and CKM mixing matrices, the parameters of which have no foundation within the Standard Model. The resulting mixing matrix parameterisation requires only three real parameters, and is thus potentially more constraining than those in current use. These parameters result in a non standard set of CKM phases, in agreement with observations from CDF and D0.
